The Photograph
Suilven and Canisp
Hasselblad XPan 45mm
The sculpted flanks of Suilven were carved out by Scotland's last retreating ice sheet nearly 12,000 years ago – relatively recent in geological terms, as the landscape upon which it resides is thought to be around three billion years old. Little wonder then that these iconic survivors, known as inselbergs, are full of individual character, making excellent photographic subjects. This image is the view south-east from Suilven's highest summit, Caisteal Liath. While waiting for sunset I watched the colours change and the shadows extend, reaching out into the oncoming dusk.
