Stob Ghabhar, the "goat's peak", stands as the finest summit of the Black Mount, with one of the best 360-degree panoramas in the area. It's a part of Scotland I know extremely well, and this view contains many of my favourite mountains. Picking out summits I've climbed brings back memories of very different days spent among them, from summer through to winter, and is a reminder of just how different the same landscape can look. This was Christmas Eve. Visibility down in the glens was poor beneath a thick layer of haze, yet above it the summits stood in incredibly clear air, with the boundary between the two sharply defined across the landscape. To the east, a cloud inversion was slowly advancing over the hills. Despite everything happening around me, there wasn't a breath of wind. It was cold, completely still and absolutely silent.
