The ancient woods and narrow confines at the Rocks of Solitude on the River North Esk dictate that it can be extremely difficult for light to penetrate sufficiently to fill a panoramic frame. From previous experience I knew of a gap in the trees that would allow a very short window of morning light to reach the shadowy gorge; this window corresponded with my visit in autumn, adding a vital canopy of colour to the scene.
