The Old Man of Hoy is a needle of ancient Orcadian sandstone that rises 137 metres from the Atlantic. It is one of the tallest sea stacks in Scotland and until relatively recently – around the late eighteenth century – the exposed structure formed a huge sea arch that has since been separated by the power of natural coastal erosion.
