The Highland Boundary Fault forms one of Scotland’s great geological dividing lines, separating the softer landscape of the Lowlands from the mountains of the Highlands. From this viewpoint that transition can almost be read in the landscape, with the distinctive shape of Conic Hill marking the fault near Loch Lomond and Ben Lomond rising prominently beyond. Further north, the hills of the Trossachs gradually merge into layer upon layer of Highland mountains. In the low evening light and distant haze, that change in scale and character seemed particularly clear, the landscape becoming progressively wilder towards the horizon.
