On my approach from Dalmally I could see the lower slopes of Ben Cruachan sweeping up and disappearing into an ominous blanket of low-lying cloud. The outlook was bleak and I had my doubts, but I decided to press on. I made my way up and into the cloud. At around 600 metres I hit the well-defined snow line and hoped, with every step, that I would emerge from the omnipresent gloom. Eventually I reached the crest of the main ridge and the cloud began to thin. As I finally breached the surface a whole new world suddenly revealed itself.
