An unusually prolonged spell of April snowfall had left the mountains under a deep covering of snow, extending far below the summits and almost to sea level. This photograph was made at around 8pm, in conditions more commonly associated with midwinter. The difference was the time of year. By April, the sun was setting much later, allowing this extraordinary combination of winter snow and late evening light.
