The Photograph

Sgorr nan Lochan Uaine

Hasselblad X2D 28mm

A hidden summit tucked between Glen Torridon and Achnashellach, Sgòrr nan Lochan Uaine (871m) sits in the shadow of Torridon's giants, Liathach, Beinn Eighe and Beinn Alligin. Its Gaelic name translates as the "peak of the little green loch", a reference to Lochan Uaine lying below the mountain. The forecast had suggested the possibility of an extensive cloud inversion across much of the North West Highlands. I spent much of the ascent inside the cloud before finally emerging above it at around 2,500 feet. As the evening progressed, the inversion gradually dropped, revealing Lochan Uaine below while the great Torridon mountains remained clear above the cloud. After sunset I headed back down, eventually disappearing beneath the inversion again. Below it was dark and damp, a stark contrast to the world I had just left behind.
