The view towards Ben Lomond from Beinn Dubh, high above Luss, is, to my mind, one of the finest viewpoints anywhere around Loch Lomond. Timing is particularly important here. At sunrise, much of Ben Lomond's western slopes normally remain in shadow, but close to the winter solstice, when the sun rises at its most southerly point, the light reaches further across the mountain. I planned this photograph for that brief period of the year, when the low winter sun could illuminate as much of its snow-covered western face as possible.
