The lower slopes around Loch Etive support a rich mixture of native woodland, with Scots pine growing alongside birch, rowan, oak, hazel and holly. In autumn these woods provide a very different setting for Ben Cruachan, as the birches and other broadleaves turn while the dark pines remain unchanged. I made this photograph at the height of the autumn colour, deliberately giving as much importance to the woodland as the mountain beyond.
