Ben Alder (1,148m) is one of Scotland's great remote mountains, rising between Loch Ericht and Loch Laggan in the heart of the Central Highlands. Winter always seems to reveal the character of a mountain better than any other season, and under deep snow Ben Alder becomes an altogether more imposing place. The long approach is one of the reasons a mountain bike is so useful here, although on this occasion I spent much of it breaking trail through fresh snow, which made riding considerably harder than it sounds. Some mountains are simply made for winter, and Ben Alder is one of them.
