The Photograph
Loch Etive from Ben Cruachan
Hasselblad X1D 75mm
I've climbed Ben Cruachan many times over the years, but remarkably, this was the only occasion when I reached the summit in clear conditions. The photograph was made on the winter solstice, when the setting sun is at its most southerly point, sending its low light directly down Glen Etive. The view was fleeting, however. Banks of low cloud and mist were swirling through the glens and around the surrounding mountains, constantly shifting and changing the landscape. It wasn't long before the cloud rose and finally engulfed the summit, bringing an end to a view I had waited many years to see.
